Camp Leo Named After Leo: The Rescued Snow Leopard

The rescue of a seven weeks old orphaned snow leopard is a fascinating true story documented in a popular children’s book entitled as Leo - The Snow Leopard: The True Story of an Amazing Rescue authored by Craig Hatkoff, Isabella Hatkoff, and Juliana Hatkoff.

The endangered snow leopard Leo was found & rescued by Kamal, an inspector in Gilgit – Baltistan Wildlife Department who initially sheltered Leo in his home & then transferred him to Central Karakoram National Park and stayed close friends for a period of 16 months. The official authorities discovered sooner that they didn’t have resources to take proper care of him. With collaborative efforts of Government of Pakistan & United States and Wildlife Conservation Society, Leo was flown to Bronx Zoo, New York. Leo is continuing to live his happy life with a new friend Shelby.

The glamping site comprising of 2 huts & four tents is being run by local community, which is helping them enhance sustainable means of income and providing local & international tourists with an immersive experience. The direct economic impact of this project is creating jobs for approx. 20 – 25 locals who are involved in service provision to the tourists.
